Pictures of the completed installation will be posted by late September… stay tuned.
About the sculpture project:
The inspiration for the sculpture came from the following passage:
Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders …and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. – Hebrews 21:1, NIV
In context, the cloud of witnesses that this passage references is a lineage of Old Testament characters who lived by faith, acting upon the promises of an invisible God. Self-proclaimed exiles, these individuals set their sights on a home beyond their physical one.
Five women recently released from Arkansas’ Wrightsville Correctional Facility were asked to reflect upon individuals, or “witnesses,” whose support and examples encouraged them as they prepared for life outside of prison. Each woman sculpted an object that signifies one such individual in her life. I then cast multiples of each object and then suspended them on cables to form a cloud. Collectively, this cloud testifies to the internal strength provided by the women’s support network of individuals in the larger community.
The installation, located in the Bernice Garden, 1401 S. Main st. Little Rock, AR will be on view from September 22, 2011 through August, 2012.
